Lindsay Lohan Back in Action

Lindsay Lohan just landed a foolproof excuse to justify her increasing absences from Wonderland: She's back at work.

Just nine days after admitting herself into the posh Los Angeles rehab facility, Lohan was back in front of the camera Friday as production resumed on her temporarily stalled thriller, I Know Who Killed Me. The news was first reported by E! Online senior editor Marc Malkin.

"She is doing fine right now," confirmed publicist Leslie Sloane Zelnick. "She is allowed to work, and then she returns to treatment at night."

Earlier this month, the 20-year-old's physical condition, not her efforts toward recovery, had thwarted filming. Production was halted at the start of the month when Lohan underwent an emergency appendectomy. She only recently received the all-clear from her doctor to resume her I Know Who Killed Me duties—namely, portraying a stripper.

North Korea Was Charged By US For Misus UN Aid Funds

The United States is accusing the U.N. development agency of allowing North Korea to illegally divert tens of millions of dollars in humanitarian aid funds for its own use. VOA's correspondent at the United Nations, Peter Heinlein, reports Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is asking an external audit of all U.N. aid agencies.

The U.S. mission to the United Nations sent a letter this week to the U.N. Development Program (UNDP), charging that the agency's North Korea projects have been systematically used to benefit of the Kim Jong Il regime.

A copy of the letter signed by the U.S. ambassador for U.N. management and reform, Mark Wallace, and obtained by VOA suggests that tens of millions of dollars may have been illegally diverted to North Korea's coffers since 1998, with the complicity of the UNDP board of directors.

The story was first reported in Friday's edition of The Wall Street Journal newspaper.

Ambassador Wallace was not available Friday, and a U.S. mission spokesman declined to comment on the allegations. But U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, a former South Korean foreign minister, met urgently with UNDP Associate Administrator Ad Melkert to discuss the matter. more

"Cameron Diaz Visits Music City"

Cameron Diaz reportedly recently broke up with Justin Timberlake, and to get away from the tabloids, escaped to Nashville. The actress spent two nights at the fancy Hermitage Hotel downtown .

There's no word on what brought her to Music City, but while at the hotel, she walked around the block to the Tag Art Gallery on 5th Avenue. She peeked inside the gallery, saw a painting she liked and started knocking on the window. Wearing a simple top and jeans, Diaz introduced herself to gallery owner Jerry Dale McFadden. She asked a bunch of questions about the painting, but left without buying it.

In other entertainment news, Dallas Cowboys’ quarterback Tony Romo bobbled the snap in Saturday’s playoff game against the Seattle Seahawks. His purported girlfriend Carrie Underwood wasn't there and instead, was at Bailey's Sports Bar in downtown Nashville during the game.

Also, "Nashville Star" began its new season Friday night. This year, there are two new judges; Randy Owen from Alabama and Blake Shelton. Shelton might have an advantage, because his lady friend, Miranda Lambert, got her start in the music biz when she was a contestant on "Nashville Star". It doesn't, however, look like Shelton will beasking her opinions about this season's talent as the two don't see eye-to-eye on music. Lambert apparently doesn't even like Blake's own music. Indonesia Plane Search Focuses On Undersea Object

A U.S. navy ship joined the search on Tuesday for an Indonesian airliner that went missing eight days ago with 102 people aboard, with the hunt focusing on a large metal object far down on the sea floor.

The object was discovered on Monday by Indonesian ships with sonar technology in water about 1,000 meters (1,150 yards) deep north of Mamuju in West Sulawesi province.

There was no immediate confirmation that it was the Adam Air Boeing 737-400 that vanished in bad weather on January 1.

The USNS Mary Sears, an oceanographic survey ship, had reached the area being investigated, said First Air Marshal Eddy Suyanto, the Makassar air base commander heading the search.

"Mary Sears is currently working with Fatahillah (an Indonesian vessel), but as of yet there is no information on the result," Suyanto told a news conference.

The U.S. ship is equipped with side-scan sonar and satellite imagery capabilities, the U.S. embassy in Jakarta said.

The Indonesian navy was also sending at least four vessels to the scene, including one with a mini-submarine.

Australia Warns Of Bombs In Southern Philippines Between 9 & 16 Jan.

The Australian embassy in Manila warned on Monday that militants could be planning to bomb cities in the southern Philippines this week when 16 Asian leaders will gather in the central Philippines for a rescheduled summit.

The Australian government has already warned its citizens to stay away from the central island of Cebu while the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) and other East Asian countries meet there on Jan 10-15. Canberra's original warning about Cebu came days before the original summit was cancelled last month, ostensibly due to a typhoon. The Canadian, British and U.S. government had given similar warnings.

In an updated travel advisory on Monday, the Australian embassy warned that terror attacks could occur between Jan. 9 and 16 in the southern city of Davao.

"Recent credible information indicates terrorists may be in the advanced stages of attack planning," it said. "Davao City may be a particular target." ASEAN leaders from Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Laos, the Philippines, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam will meet this weekend before holding an East Asia Summit with their counterparts from China, Japan, South Korea, India, Australia and New Zealand. more>

Film Critics Pan's Labyrinth Helen Mirren QueenDuring Awards

National Society Of Film Critics Pan's Labyrinth Helen Mirren QueenDuring awards season you can't expect every awards ceremony to be as lavish as The Oscars or as fun-loving as The Golden Globes; sometimes they can just consist of 58 people sitting around in a restaurant yakking on about films they quite liked.

That's exactly what the National Society of Film Critics went and did - instead of hiring out a big hall and a fancy presenter and inviting all kinds of famous folk to carp on about how wonderful they think they are, the National Society Of Film Critics just got together at Sardi's restaurant in New York and decided that the best film of last year was Pan's Labyrinth, a Spanish fairytale that everyone likes the look of but has never seen, and that Helen Mirren was the best actress for dressing up like an old lady and never smiling in The Queen.

With Oscar night a month and a bit away, speculation is frantic as to which actors and films will win academy awards, probably just so that people can shrug, mumble "yeah, I thought so" and then laugh at whatever ridiculous clothes Jennifer Aniston decided to wear for about a week. And because of this furious speculation, even the smallest little awards ceremony gets taken notice of. That can be a group of dusty old historians and students like the Clint Eastwood loving National Board Of Review or a few thousand people who get paid to memorise three or four words at a time like the Babel loving Screen Actors Guild or what basically amounts to Jack Nicholson and his friends like the similarly Babel-loving Golden Globes.

But what about the film critics? The brave men and women who have to sit through endless rubbish films and then explain just why they were so rubbish to a loyal leadership. Many members of the National Society Of Film Critics had to watch Failure To Launch and The Break Up within months of each other, and if that doesn't count as paying their dues to humanity there's something deeply wrong with society. Handily though, the National Society Of Film Critics do get a shot at helping to build Oscar buzz with their National Society Of Film Critics Awards, where 50 or so film critics meet up in a New York restaurant and babble and vote and generally try to out-obscure each other until they've decided what films they all liked the most.

And this year the film the National Society Of Film Critics like Guillermo del Toro's spooky fantasy Pan's Labyrinth more than any other, just edging out the even more obscure The Death of Mr. Lazurescu and the Clint Eastwood film about all the Japanese soldiers getting blown up. more>

Britney's Wild Ways Score Big Payday

Hussein's Voice Speaks In Court In Praise Of Atrocities

BAGHDAD, Jan. 8 - The courtroom he dominated for 15 months seemed much smaller on Monday without him there to mock the judges and assert his menacing place in history.

But the thick, high-register voice of Saddam Hussein was unmistakable. In audio recordings made years ago and played 10 days after his hanging, Mr. Hussein was heard justifying the use of chemical weapons against the Iraqi Kurds in the late 1980s, predicting they would kill "thousands" and saying he alone among Iraq's leaders had the authority to order chemical attacks.

In the history of prosecutions against some of the last century's grimmest men, there can rarely have been a moment that so starkly caught a despot's unpitying nature.

On one recording, Mr. Hussein presses the merits of chemical weapons on Izzat Ibrahim al-Douri, his vice-president, and now, the Americans believe, the fugitive leader of the Sunni insurgency that has tied down thousands of American troops. Mr. Douri, a notorious hard-liner, asks whether chemical attacks will be effective against civilian populations, and suggests that they might stir an international outcry.

"Yes, they're very effective if people don’t wear masks," Mr. Hussein replies.

"You mean they will kill thousands?" Mr. Douri asks.

"Yes, they will kill thousands," Mr. Hussein says.

Before he was hanged Dec. 30 for offenses in another case, Mr. Hussein had used the so-called Anfal trial, involving the massacre of as many as 180,000 Iraqi Kurds, as a platform for arguing that the chemical weapons attacks of the kind that devastated the town of Halabja on March 16, 1988, were carried out by Iranian forces then fighting Iraq in an eight-year war.

But the recordings told another story. Court officials gave no hint as to how they obtained the recordings, which Iraqis familiar with Mr. Hussein’s voice said seemed to be authentic. But they appeared to have been made during meetings of his Revolutionary Command Council and of the Baath Party High Command, two groups that acted as rubber stamps for his decisions. Mr. Hussein regularly ordered meetings to be recorded, according to Iraqis who knew the inner workings of Mr. Hussein’s dictatorship.

Mr. Hussein sounds matter of fact as he describes what chemical weapons will do. "They will prevent people eating and drinking the local water, and they won’t be able to sleep in their beds," he says. "They will force people to leave their homes and make them uninhabitable until they have been decontaminated.

As for the concern about international reaction, he assures Mr. Douri that only he will order the attacks. "I don’t know if you know this, Comrade Izzat, but chemical weapons are not used unless I personally give the orders," he says.

When Iraq resumed the genocide trial of its former leaders on Monday, Mr. Hussein's high-backed, black vinyl seat at the front of the dock was left ominously empty. Something about the six remaining defendants, including Ali Hassan al-Majid, Mr. Hussein’s cousin, who was known among Iraqis as Chemical Ali for his role in overseeing the attacks on the Kurds, suggested that they felt orphaned without the commanding presence of Mr. Hussein.

Blessed? Maybe, But Don't Even Try To Tell Me That Angelina Jolie's A Virgin

I'm referring to Angelina Jolie, of course.

PALEIGH,N.C. - A North Carolina artist intrigued by the public obsession with celebrity has found herself feeding that obsession with a painting of actress Angelina Jolie as the Virgin Mary hovering over a Wal-Mart check-out line.

Kate Kretz has painted for 20 years but none of her previous work has garned the attention given "Blessed Art Thou," showing this weekend at Art Miami, an annual explosion of modern and contemporary art.

My only question is, what the hell was she thinking?

The painting - acrylic and oil on linen- depicts an angelic Jolie in the clouds, holding her newborn daughter, Shiloh, with children Maddox and Zahara at her legs. Below them is a Wal-Mart checkout line. The painting is for sale for $50,000 through Chelsea Galleria in Miami, which represents Kretz.

I guess that she's thinking that a payday is on the way, and I'm thinking that she's probably right.

Attention Wal-Mart shoppers...paging Brad Pitt's wallet;please report to aisle 31 to be cleaned out.

Woman Says Nicole Kidman Had Affair With Keith Urban

Was Keith Urban unfaithful to actress Nicole Kidman?

A 23-year-old Nashville, Tenn., woman claims she had an affair with the country music star before he married actress Kidman. Amanda Wyatt told London's The Mail that she and Urban met in Nashville in 2004 and had an affair up to a month before his wedding to Kidman in June.

The reports became public on the same day that there were reports that Urban and Kidman reunited in the actress' hometown of Sydney after the Australian-reared country singer completed treatment for alcohol abuse.

Urban's publicist Paul Freundlich said the alleged affair is all fiction.

Urban, the Country Music Association male vocalist of the year, is in Australia with his wife and family but will continue alcohol rehab when he gets back to the U.S.

Urban, 39, checked himself into a rehabilitation treatment center in the United States in October, with Kidman by his side. He flew into Sydney on Tuesday, Australian Associated Press reported.

Keith Urban's Rehab Stint Continues

In spite of rumors to the contrary, actress Nicole Kidman's country singer husband Keith Urban is still in rehab, his publicist Paul Freundlich said. Rumors of Urban having left rehab started after a celebrity magazine reported seeing the 39-year-old singer sharing a brunch with his 39-year-old wife on Sunday in Los Angeles's LA Polo Lounge.

"At this stage in the treatment, patients are occasionally allowed to leave for short periods of time. Keith is not out of rehab and is not back home in Nashville. This is completely inaccurate. He is still undergoing treatment," Freundlich said in a statement.

Urban, who married Kidman in June this year, entered rehab for alcohol abuse in October at the Betty Ford Center in Palm Springs in California. Recently, Kidman at a film premiere became visibly upset when asked about her husband's progress. However, given their latest outing, the couple seemed to be doing fine.

Kidman's Acting High

7th January 2007 09:45:02

Nicole Kidman gets a natural high from acting.

The 'Cold Mountain' star says she loves being an actress because she enjoys getting close to her co-stars and directors.

She said: "I love the intimacy of working with the director and the other actors. That's probably the thing that draws me, that's where I get my high - and when people give you feedback in terms of being emotionally affected by something that you did."

Nicole, 39, has also revealed that while she is happy to obey a director's wishes and demands, if she doesn't respect the director, she can find filmmaking torturous.

She explained: "I've been in the hands of some people I didn't respect, and that's torture. If I can respect somebody, I'll walk to the ends of the earth. I'm devoted. But if they do something where I'm like, 'I actually don't think you're very smart or very good,' then it's, 'Oh, no!' And if you discover that after you've signed on to do it, that's a disaster.

"I am not a control freak, I'll be put in the hands of a director and go, 'Mould me, change me'.

Tom Cruise...Christianologist?

"It's like, you could be a Christian and be a Scientologist, okay."

I say:

"It's like, no you can't be a Christian and be a Scientologist...not okay, okay?"

Tom Tom Tom Tom Tom - you should probably stick to what you do best - acting and doing couch jumping/psychiatry assaulting interviews that make people go... "huh?"

But definitely avoid the subject of Christianity, because by that statement alone you assume something that simply cannot be. To say that you can be a Christian and a Scientologist is like saying you can be a dead/alive person, or that you can be a tall/short person. Christian-Scientologist is the ultimate in oxymorons. In fact, Christian-anything else is in the same category.

. You can't be a Christian-Buddhist.
. You can't be a Christian-Hindu.
. You can't be a Christian-Muslim.

Oh, you can say that you are, but saying it doesn't make it any more true than if I said I could swim to Hawaii. The words came out of my mouth, but the facts don't back them up.

And they don't in this case either. So let's take a look at the facts, so you won't ever be caught in the lie that apparently has gripped the Cruiser.

Fact #1: All religions DO NOT basically teach the same thing.

There are definite overlaps in some of the principles (i.e. play well with others, help the needy etc.), but the core beliefs of the major world religions (and especially Scientology) are in complete contradiction with each other. The god of Islam is not the God of the Bible. Hindus and Buddhists don't even believe in one God, Mormons and Jehovah Witnesses believe in many gods, and Scientologists believe in alien gods.

Oprah the Victim of $1.5 Million Blackmail Scheme

Oprah Winfrey was the target of an extortion plot by an Atlanta man who claimed to have damaging audio tapes he would release if he wasn't paid off, federal court charges allege.

The man, Keifer Bonvillain, is accused of illegally recording phone conversations he had with a Winfrey employee about her and her business. According to the charges, he then asked for $1.5 million from a second person, described as a Winfrey "business associate," to destroy the tapes and his notes.

The charges go on to say that Bonvillain threatened to sell the information to the tabloids or write a book about them.

Winfrey is not identified in the complaint, but instead the documents refer to an "Individual A," who is "a public figure and the owner of a Chicago-based company." The Chicago Sun-Times and Chicago Tribune on Saturday identified "Individual A" as Winfrey, whose Harpo Studios is based in Chicago.

Bonvillain's attorney, Kent Carlson, told the Tribune and Sun-Times he could neither confirm nor deny details in the complaint.

GamesIndustry.biz is reporting on the 2006 sales for each of the three new platforms. According to their numbers, the Wii beat their estimates of 1.2 million, while the PS3 only sold 700,000 units. Having most of the year to themselves, Microsoft's Xbox 360 put 4.5 million consoles into people's homes.

Sony's rival PlayStation 3 will have sold around 700,000 units in 2006, while the company predicts that Microsoft's Xbox 360 will have reached 4.5 million consoles in North America, by December 30th.

"Our checks indicate that Nintendo's Wii console continues to sell well, while Sony's PS3 supplies improved somewhat towards the end of the holiday period," said Colin Sebastian of Lazard Capital.

Britney Spears is putting fans on notice: Be prepared for her hot career comeback.

"The last couple of years have been quite a ride for me, the media has criticized my every move and printed a skewed perception of who I really am as a human being," the 25-year-old pop star/tabloid target writes in a posting Friday on her Web site.

Spears, who filed for divorce in November from Kevin Federline, 28, her husband of two years, says she is now more mature and free to explore her next move "as an entertainer with absolutely no strings attached."

Hurting Hilary Duff

Hurting Hilary Duff |

January 6, 2007 -- HILARY Duff is not yet over her breakup with Good Charlotte rocker Joel Madden, say spies who saw her and her sister Haylie club-hopping in Miami last weekend. Hilary brushed off the guys who tried to pick her up - including "Entourage" star Kevin Connolly. "Kevin got all upset when Hilary was seated next to another guy at Red Room," said our spy, "and he hung around her until he got his chance." Connolly chatted her up, but, "She looked really bored." Connolly obviously didn't get the hint and followed the Duff girls out at the end of the night.

Boy Hangs Himself Copying Saddam's Execution

A 10-year-old boy hanged himself accidentally on New Year's Eve after watching reports of Saddam Hussein’s execution, the New York Times reported.

Family members discovered the body of the boy, Sergio Pelico, hanging from his bunk bed and called the police in Webster, between Houston and Galveston.

The boy watched television reports on Saturday and asked about the execution, said an uncle, Adolfo Chavez.

"He asked, 'Is this how they killed people?' " Chavez recounted in Spanish. "We said, 'No, but they did it to this man because he's bad.' "

Chavez said his nephew had said nothing more about the hanging. Continue Reading >>> Read more!

PS3 Pricey But Impressive

In the gaming world, being first to market has its advantages, but it also has some downsides. With its Xbox 360, Microsoft has staked itself a year lead over archrival Sony in the next-gen gaming wars and, just as importantly, the battle for living-room dominance--these powerful minicomputers also do double duty as digital media hubs. In those 12 months, Microsoft has managed to sell several million consoles, work through some hardware glitches, upgrade the system's internal software, and bring out a full selection of accessories as well as a few signature games, including the company's own smash hit, Gears of War. But that year has also given Sony time to polish its more ambitious--and pricier--PlayStation 3.

Like the 360, the PS3 is available in two versions. Both feature the brand new Cell processor, a built-in Blu-ray player, and HDMI video output. The baseline 20GB version retails for $500, while the step-up deluxe model--reviewed here--boasts a 60GB hard drive, built-in Wi-Fi, a multiformat memory card reader, and silver trim for $100 more. Even though its original specs included even more features--dual HDMI output, for example--what's left is still a lot to throw into a new system, and the final product, expensive though it is, is quite impressive.

The big question, of course, is whether the PS3 is $100 to $200 better than the Xbox 360. From a pure gaming perspective, the short answer is: no, not today. As with any new gaming system, you're going to have to wait at least a year before you see game developers really start to get the most out of the PS3, and right now, there really isn't a game out there that's able to beat anything on the Xbox 360. However, in terms of design and in-the-box features, the value is here: the two versions of the PS3 are well worth their respective $500 and $600 price tags. Now, the bad news: the system will be in such short supply in the early going, you probably won't be able to get one for a while, even if you wanted to buy one. The good news is by the time you get your hands on one, Sony will have already made some improvements and added new features, and the catalog of games will have begun to be expanded.

'Alpha Dog' Faces Off-creen Drama

"Alpha Dog" stars Bruce Willis, Sharon Stone and Justin Timberlake, and premiered Wednesday in Los Angeles.

Attorneys for Jesse James Hollywood are trying to block its distribution because Hollywood is awaiting trial for events depicted in the movie.

Despite having the characters' names changed, Hollywood is shown in a bad light throughout the film, attorney James Blatt said, and a jury pool could be tainted, infringing on Hollywood's right to a fair trial.

Universal Studios argued that prohibiting the public from seeing the movie would violate the First Amendment.

Last month, a federal judge refused to stop the film's release but Hollywood appealed the decision. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals is expected to rule in the coming days.

"Alpha Dog" is based on the kidnapping and slaying of 15-year-old Nicholas Markowitz seven years ago. Prosecutors believe Hollywood, portrayed in the movie by Emile Hirsch, was the mastermind behind the murder plot. The teen's body was later found in a remote Santa Barbara County camping area.

Markowitz was killed as part of a feud Hollywood had with the victim's older half brother over a $1,200 drug debt, prosecutors said. Four others have been convicted in connection with the murder.

Hollywood fled after being charged with murder and was captured in Brazil in 2005. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges and could face the death penalty if convicted.

Also pending is a decision by the California Supreme Court, which could reverse a lower court's ruling to remove Santa Barbara County Senior Deputy District Attorney Ron Zonen from handling Hollywood's trial.

In October, the 2nd District Court of Appeal ordered Zonen removed from the case because he shared probation reports, police files and other materials with "Alpha Dog" producers. He also served as an unpaid consultant on the film.

Zonen's "actions allowed 'show business' to cast an unseemly shadow over this case," Presiding Judge Arthur Gilbert wrote in the court's Oct. 5 decision.

Blatt, who has seen the film, said that Zonen's involvement in "Alpha Dog" gives the public a slanted view of what happened.

Hitachi Introduces 1-Terabyte Hard Drive

Hitachi Global Storage Technologies is first to the mat with an announcement of a 1-terabyte hard disk drive. Industry analysts widely expected a 1TB drive to ship sometime in 2007; Hitachi grabbed a head start on the competition by announcing its drive today, just before the largest U.S. consumer electronics show starts next week.

According to Hitachi, the drive ships in the first quarter of 2007, and will cost $399--less than the price of two individual 500GB hard drives today. The drive, called the Deskstar 7K1000, will be shown this weekend in Las Vegas at the 2007 International CES, also known as the Consumer Electronics Show, as well as at the Storage Visions storage conference.

Hitachi will have three flavors of the 1TB drive; however, only the Deskstar version will be available at launch. The company also plans to offer a CinemaStar version of the drive, for use in DVR and set-top boxes, as well as an enterprise version with a certified mean time between failure rating. Both of those versions are expected in the second quarter of this year.
