New Technique To Detect Cancer In Earliest Stages

New Technique To Detect Cancer In Earliest Stages

A new technique has been developed at Singapore's National University Hospital to detect cancer in its earliest stages, a team of researchers said on Saturday.

The hospital is conducting a trial involving 58 patients, 12 of whom are receiving treatment after the 'optical biopsy' diagnosed them with early-stage cervical cancer.

The technique detects pre-cancers or collections of a few hundred malignant cells among millions of healthy cells.

Pap smears, the usual method used to test for cancer in the cervix, do not detect these pre-cancers, assistant professor Huang Zhiwei, the project leader, told The Straits Times.

Using light waves near the infrared region of the spectrum, the team reported they were able to accurately detect early tumours deep beneath the tissue surface.

The radiation targets specific proteins and carbohydrates in the cells, Huang said.

Varying combinations of biochemical molecules create a 'fingerprint,' helping clinicians determine whether the cell is normal or not, he was quoted as saying.

Conventional methods of optical testing used normal white light or ultraviolet light.

White light allows doctors to view only late-stage tumours that have already caused abnormalities on the tissue surface, Huang said. Ultraviolet light cannot penetrate far into the tissue.

The new technique can eventually be applied to almost any cancer, but not without more clinical trials, he added.>

XBOX 360: World Largest Balloon Record

Australia and Xbox break world water balloon record!

More than 50,000 water balloons were thrown today as gamers from around the world took part in the world’s largest water balloon event at Australia’s Coogee Beach.

The Water Balloon Challenge celebrated the record-breaking launch of the Xbox 360 console in Australia and raised money for a local lifesaving group.

2,849 participants threw 55,000 water balloons, approximately the same number of Xbox 360 consoles that have been sold in the country since launching on March 23, 2006.

Gamers travelled from as far away as Latin America, Europe, Asia and the United States to take part in the event.

The previous world record was held by Spain, where 2,677 people threw 50,855 balloons in 2005.

“This was a great chance for us to do something fun for all of those thousands of Australians who helped make the Xbox 360 launch such a success,” said David McLean, Regional Director, Xbox Australia and New Zealand. “It was a great chance for everyone to jump in and remember the joy and fulfillment that comes from playing games of any kind.”

The Water Balloon Challenge had a serious side as well. Five dollars from every registration fee was donated to the Coogee Surf Lifesaving Club, to assist in its ongoing patrol of the famous Sydney beach.

“There is nothing more Australian than coming together to play on the beach. Today’s event was a massive success and the proceeds donated from Xbox will be used to upgrade our life saving training facilities and replacement of critical life saving equipment,” said Rob Yelon from Coogee Surf Life Saving Club.

Microsoft Xbox Problems Report

Early users of Microsoft Corp.'s new Xbox Live online TV and movie service have been reporting widespread technical problems, including unusually long download times, undelivered content and repeat charges.

Microsoft acknowledged the difficulties Friday, promised refunds to people experiencing trouble and said it was on track to resolving the situation.

The company said usage of the service over the holiday exceeded its projections and weighed down its infrastructure.

The Xbox Live Video Marketplace debuted Wednesday.

The demand was "significantly beyond what anybody ever expected," said Aaron Greenberg, the Xbox Live group's marketing manager. As of Friday afternoon, he said, the company was "optimistic that we will have a good solution in place soon."

It's nonetheless an inauspicious start for the service, which Microsoft is seeking to use to help differentiate the year-old Xbox 360 in the competition with the newly launched Sony PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii game consoles.

On blogs and other online forums, users reported downloads taking hours longer than expected, if they were delivered at all. Particularly difficult to download were the large high-definition movie and television files offered by the service.

"The service stopped my movie download halfway and wouldn't download more unless I bought it again," wrote one contributor to the gadget blog Gizmodo, under the headline, "I Was Mugged by the Xbox 360 Video Store."

Some other users of the Xbox Live service reported spending dozens of hours trying to download individual movies, without success.

advertising
Although times were to vary depending on connection speed, Microsoft had said high-definition movies, the largest video files offered through the service, would download overnight.

People who bought standard-definition shows were expected to be able to start watching them within minutes, while they were still downloading.

Greenberg said Microsoft would offer refunds to people even in situations where the content was ultimately received, if it took longer than it should have. He said users experiencing problems should call the customer service line at 800-4MYXBOX.

For people charged more than once to rent a movie, refunds will be automated, Greenberg said.

The service offers television shows for permanent ownership, not rental, so multiple charges shouldn't have happened in those cases, he said.

Microsoft's Xbox Live Marketplace system requires people to buy points that they can then use to purchase content online. Standard-definition TV shows cost the equivalent of $2; high-definition TV shows $3; standard-definition, new-release movie rentals $4; and high-definition, new-release movie rentals $6.

Greenberg said the Xbox Live online multiplayer gaming system runs on a separate infrastructure and wasn't slowed by the video-download problems.>

Tsunami 513 Unclaimed Bodies In Thailand

Tsunami 513 Unclaimed Bodies In Thailand |

Forensic experts remove a body at the Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) centre at Phuket in 2005. Thailand will next week begin burying 513 bodies of tsunami victims that have gone unclaimed or unidentified nearly two years after the catastrophe.

Thailand will next week begin burying 513 bodies of tsunami victims that have gone unclaimed or unidentified nearly two years after the catastrophe.

Burial ceremonies will begin on December 1 and last six days at the Bang Maruan cemetery in the hardest-hit province of Phang Nga, just north of the resort island of Phuket, police Colonel Khemmarin Hassiri said.

The bodies include those of 103 victims who have been identified, but whose families have yet to collect the remains, Khemmarin told AFP.

They include 72 Myanmar nationals, 28 Thais, one Filipino, one Turk and one Nepalese, he said.

The other 410 bodies have still not been identified, he added.

"We have collected DNA samples from all the bodies, so if any new evidence arises, we can exhume the bodies to complete the identification process," said Khemmarin, who heads the Thai
Tsunami Victim Identification (TTVI) unit.

The bodies have been kept in a morgue that was meant to be temporary.

Khemmarin said Thai officials decided to bury the bodies because of concerns that the containers were not designed for such prolonged use and could begin to deteriorate.

Some 5,400 people were killed in Thailand on December 26, 2004, when the tsunami tore across the Indian Ocean and killed 220,000 people in a dozen countries.

Roughly half of the victims in Thailand were foreign holidaymakers.

Thailand and the United States are set to deploy the first tsunami warning system in the Indian Ocean next week.

Thailand believes the system is essential to reassuring tourists about their safety, although tourism in the tsunami-hit region is already on the rebound.>

Breast Implanted Silicon Threats Women

Breast Implanted Silicon Threats Women

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration's decision to approve silicone breast implants has been attacked by some critics as a threat to women's health. But the agency made a reasonable call that will allow women, in consultation with their surgeons, to make their own judgments.

The silicone implants were largely banned in 1992 because the manufacturers could not prove they were safe and effective after health concerns arose. But over the years a series of assessments concluded that the main health fears were overblown. The implants did not appear to cause such major diseases as cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, immunological diseases or neurological problems.

That does not mean they are risk free. In approving the silicone implants made by two companies, the FDA heaped on enough caveats to give women ample reason to pause before leaping into cosmetic breast surgery. The devices are prone to rupture, contract or cause pain and inflammation in the breast as time goes on. The FDA recommends that women have regular MRI screenings to detect whether their implant has ruptured, imposing a lifetime cost that can exceed the thousands of dollars spent on the initial surgery.>

Bumrungrad Hospital Ranks Top 10

Bumrungrad Hospital Ranks Top 10 |

Established in 1980, Bumrungrad Hospital is a recognized leader in private health delivery throughout Thailand and the region. In 1996, Bumrungrad renewed its long-standing commitment to quality care with the opening of its new 554-bed facility, amongst the largest private hospitals in the ASEAN countries.

One of the top two American news magazines, with over 20 million readers worldwide – featured Bumrungrad International in this week’s cover article titled “Medical Meccas.” The magazine’s international editions listed Thailand’s largest private hospital first among 10 “World-class Destinations” that included hospitals in Germany, India, Russia, the UK, France, Israel, and the US. Bumrungrad was the only hospital from Thailand.

Newsweek called Bumrungrad “Asia’s first internationally accredited hospital and one of the most modern and efficient medical facilities in the world.” Newsweek correspondent Joe Cochrane visited the hospital in early October, interviewing management, staff, and patients.

In the article, he reports that Bumrungrad’s patients “get treatment redolent of a five-star hotel.” Attracted by “world-class medicine at developing world prices,” the hospital is “a magnet for medical tourists,” treating more foreign patients than any other hospital in the world, the magazine states.

Newsweek’s coverage joined other recent features of Bumrungrad International as a leader in medical tourism, including NBC’s Today Show, the number one rated morning news program in America; national television in Canada; Conde Naste Traveller; Time magazine; and USAToday.

Sony Cyber-Shot Defects

Sony Cyber-Shot Defects

Sony announced today that there are a number of defects with their line of Cyber-Shot digital cameras. These problems could cause the LCD to display incorrectly or not at all, and also could prevent the camera from working entirely. These problems will only occur in warm and humid areas. So if you are using a Cyber-Shot in Antarctica, you should be okay.

The defects span across eight models. Sony is expecting around 4,000 cameras to be defective and they will be offering free repairs. Oddly enough, Sony is not expecting this to affect it's yearly earnings.

Double New Business By Starting Mortgages

Sub-prime, specialist mortgage provider, Start Mortgages, has reported a 100pc rise in new business, its UK parent, Kensington Mortgages said.

The company would not provide exact figures but industry sources say Start will have lent E618 million in the year to the end of November 2006, according to a report in the Irish Times.

Start has been operating in the Irish "sub-prime" or "specialist" market for two years, catering for borrowers who have difficulty obtaining loan approval elsewhere due to poor credit histories or being self-employed.

Paul Murphy, head of sales and marketing at Start, said the specialist market is currently worth about E1 billion annually.

"We would estimate that we have the lion's share of that," he said. "There are two players in the Irish market at the moment - ourselves and GE Money."

Mr Murphy describes the market as "embryonic", and he anticipates huge growth in the coming years.

He estimates that the market has the potential to be worth E3 billion to E4 billion a year.>

Mortgages Free Advice

Mform, a new online mortgage business that bypasses intermediaries by linking consumers directly to lenders, is targeting a 1% share of the UK mortgage market in its first year of operation.

The company has launched a website that permits consumers to search thousands of home loan options. Using Moneyfacts’ data, the service enables consumers to create best buy lists of products and then to directly arrange mortgages with lenders, either through web application pages or through a call centre.

Mform’s goal is to handle 24,000 drawn down mortgages in its first year of operation, or 2,000 mortgages a month.

Eamonn Rice, chief executive of the new venture, and a former partner in the accountants Ernst & Young, said: “We’re setting out to revolutionise the market by, where appropriate, taking out the intermediary, by trying to equip customers with a better knowledge of the mortgage market, by giving them a clearer understanding of the 6,000 products and the 120 lenders on the market, and making it possible for them to complete a mortgage application quickly and easily from the security of their own home.”

Deals have already been signed with a group of lenders including HBoS, Abbey, Lloyds TSB, Northern Rock, Alliance & Leicester, Dunfermline and Chelsea, which together account for more than 60% of the UK mortgage market.

Mr Rice added: “We expect to have signed up the rest of the market within the next few months.”

Mform charges lenders a commission of 0.175% of loan value, roughly half of the commission charged by brokers. Mr Rice said commission rates are lower because Mform does not handle credit and affordability checking, nor identity verification.

The venture has received a reported £5m in start-up funding from Artemis Investment Management, whose retail funds have acquired a 25% stake>
