Grand Canyon's Glass Skywalk

|

Would you dare to walk on this for the first time?
This 30-million-dollar stel-and-glass walkway will open to the public in coming March 2007.The Hualapai, or "People of the Tall Pines," are working with the Las Vegas, Nevada-based Destination Grand Canyon to market the Skywalk and draw in valuable tourist dollars.

The steel-and-glass Skywalk, seen in this artist's conception, will jut 70 feet (21 meters) from the canyon wall and sit 4,000 feet (1,220 meters) above the Colorado River.
The Native American tribe building the walkway hopes to bring in valuable tourist dollars that will bolster the local economy. But some members and residents worry that the structure will be doomed by its support system—steel poles drilled 40 feet (12 meters) into the porous canyon wall.

California businessman David Jin was first inspired to build the Skywalk in 1996 after taking a tour of the canyon. According to the Associated Press, the Hualapai tribe will own the Skywalk, but Jin will collect up to half of the money from ticket sales for the next 25 years.
